Gerald Lawyer
Gerald Ray Lawyer, 86, of Washington, Indiana, passed away Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Indiana.
"John Deere Jerry" worked at Washington Implement, both as a mechanic and in the parts department. It was there that he received his nickname, because of the way he answered the telephone. In 1979, he started work at Indianapolis Power and Light in Petersburg. He retired as a utility shift operator in 1998. Jerry was a charter member of the Daviess County Rural Water System and served as a board chairman. For over 50 years Jerry could be found in the cattle ring at the 4-H Fair assisting members as a ring man. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. One of his greatest honors was being on Honor Flight EVV8, and he enjoyed being around the other veterans on that flight. Jerry served as an Army sergeant during the Korean War era.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor (Stuckey) Lawyer, who he married Jan. 2, 1956; sons Allan Lawyer and his companion Debra Brewster of Amenia, New York; Steven Lawyer and wife Polly of Elnora, Indiana; sister Beverly Rose Harner of Washington, Indiana; brother, Charles (Linda) Lawyer of Seymour, Indiana; six grandsons, Brian Ray Lawyer and wife Erin, of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Isaac Lawyer of Lake Placid, New York, Blake Lawyer and wife, Katelyn, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Blane Lawyer and wife Hillary, of Washington, Brandt Lawyer and wife McKenzie of Bloomington, Indiana, and Braden Lawyer of Evansville, Indiana; six great-grandchildren, Jared, Lucas, Zachary, Tinley, Preston and Magnolia Elynnor Lawyer; as well as several nieces and nephews.
