Charles Thomas Baumert (Tom) Obituary

Washington - Charles Thomas Baumert, 82, Washington, passed away during the night hours May 11, 2025. He was born May 26, 1942, in Washington to Robert F. and Camilla (Sturgeon) Baumert. On November 3, 1962, he married Beth Sedenquist. They enjoyed the next 58 years together until her passing January 7,2021.

Tom served his country honorably in the US Air Force from 1960 to 1964. After discharge from the military, he joined the Washington Police Department in 1965 as patrolman. He later became a sergeant and went on to serve as police captain in 1972 — a position he held until he was promoted to police chief. In 1984, he became a detective captain a position he held until his retirement.

In 1987, he was elected mayor of Washington and was elected for two more terms serving from 1988-2003. During his career and retirement he served on the Daviess County Growth Council, Daviess County Solid Waste District Board, was a member of the Southern Indiana Mayor's Roundtable, Crane Regional Economic Development Organization, and chairman of the Southern Indiana Development Commission.

Tom was a member of the Washington American Legion, VFW Men's Auxiliary, Moose Lodge, Knight of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Eagles, Fraternal Order of Police, Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and AARP.

Those left to mourn Tom's passing include his sons, Charles A. Baumert of Washington and Clifford T. (Audra ) Baumert of Destin, Florida; grandson, Ryan Charles (Katie) Baumert of Washington; two great grandsons, Colton Baumert and Gunner Baumert both of Washington; five brothers, Robert 'Bud' (Ruth) Baumert of Washington, Richard L. (Shirley) Baumert of Vincennes, Barry Baumert, William 'Bill' Baumert of Washington, and Danny M. Baumert of Washington; sister, Ruth Ann Wade of Bloomington.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. and Camilla Baumert; his wife, Beth; and sister, Phyllis Brothers.

Visitation for Tom will be 11 to 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 20,2025 at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, 620 E. Viola Ave., Washington, with funeral services following at 1 p.m., with Father Paul Ferguson and Yvonne Evans officiating.

In lieu of gift or flowers. donations may be sent to St. John Cemetery, 315 N. Third St., Washington.
