Theresa Browning

Events

On Sunday, July 7, 2019, Theresa E. Browning, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of 86.
Theresa was born in Washington, Indiana, to Dan and Adah (Mattingly) McAtee on Nov. 14, 1932. She attended Washington Catholic High School and was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Browning, on April 9, 1951. She had seven children, eight grandchildren, and so many others that affectionately referred to her as Mom or Grandma. She prided herself in making sure everyone knew the door was always open at the Browning's and you couldn't leave without something to eat. She was happiest when her house was packed full of chaos, love and laughter. She was a longtime member of the Golden Girls Card Club, part of the original Caring and Sharing group at St. Mary's, and a member of Daughters of Isabella. Theresa had a passion for Cardinals baseball and could typically be found at a local sporting event cheering on those she loved.
Theresa is survived by her sister, Lucille Ray of Washington; four sons, Jim (Pam), Jeff, Jay and Jerry Browning, all of Washington; daughter Beth Browning; daughter-in-law Janet Browning of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Erik (Randi) Browning of Washington; Chrissy (Adam) Hunt, Justin (Sarah) Browning, Kurt (Brandy) Browning, Lindsey (John) Freyberger, Brooke (Jennifer) Brink, Jaycie Browning and Hallie Browning; 13 great-grandchildren, Bryce, Nathan, Jade, Alex, Chloe, Bree, Carter, Aurora, Tatum, Jackson, Gracelyn, Jocelyn and Oliver; lifelong friend and partner in crime, Norma Van Lue (the two were comically referred to as Lucy and Ethel); sister-in-law Elizabeth Browning; and longtime friend and caregiver, Mary Graber.
Theresa is preceded in death by her husband, William J. Browning; two sons, Joe and John Browning; parents Dan and Adah McAtee; brother William "Tinker" McAtee; and great-grandchild John Carter Freyberger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, with Rev. Paul Ferguson as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2019, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, with a wake service at 3:30 p.m. and a Daughters of Isabella service at 7:45 p.m., and Saturday morning prior to the service. In lieu flowers donations may be made to Ride Solution at P.O. Box 367, Washington, IN 47501.

I grew up with Joe. We met at St Mary's in 3rd grade. Spent many summer nights with Joe and his family. I always felt so at home there. Mrs Browning was always my "other mother". She always had a smile for me, even as I became an adult. I'll miss her so much. Rest in peace mom.

When one needs a friend, you could always be sure Teresa Browning would show up to give comfort if needed. She was one of God's good gifts and one would always feel the best if Teresa was around, she will be missed by me and many others who had the privilege of knowing her.

The first time I ever ate at your home was Sunday dinner. Theresa was at the stove and she had two skillets of fried chicken cooking, counter top full of food, the table had big bowls of mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sliced tomatoes, gravy, hot rolls. Every kid in the neighborhood plus the Devine kids were running in n out grabbing a plate and eating. I don’t know how many chickens she fried that day. I don’t even want to know what their food bill was. She finally fixed herself a plate and came into the living room sat down and started eating. I asked her if she wanted me to help do the dishes, she just smiled and said no it’ll get done. A woman after my own heart. I asked if cou...ld help with the lundrey. She smiled again and said no dear that will get done too, someday. I loved, loved this woman dearly. I am so glad that God let me be a part of this wonderful family even if it was just for a short while. Love to all of youRead more
