Michael "Mike" James McKinney, of Lakeland, Florida, went to be with the Lord Sunday.
He was born in Bedford on July 25, 1959, to James and Barbara (Meek) McKinney. He graduated from Washington High School in 1978.
He moved to Lakeland in 1980 and attended Travis Technical School and received a trade in air condition and refrigeration. He was employed with Ace Refrigeration up until he opened his own business, McKinney's Air Conditioning and Heat Inc. in 1988. One of his greatest moments was when his oldest son Josh joined him in the business in 2006 and continued to work beside his father daily. Mike enjoyed playing catch with his two sons, teaching and coaching their baseball teams. He also had a passion for fishing and motorcycles. He loved following the Hatchets, even from afar. Mike's smile and loving personality made an impact on everyone he met.
He is survived by two sons, Joshua Michael McKinney and Damien Shane McKinney; four sisters, Nancy (Class of '73) (Buzz) Keene, Shirley (Class of '74) (Phil) Irwin, Dianna White (Class of '75), Tanna (Class of '79) (Terry) Katz of Lakeland; many nieces and nephews; two aunts, Sue (Meek) House of Richmond, Indiana, and Mildred Meek of Odon.
He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Ray and Dorothy Meek; and uncle, Robert (Bud) Meek.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Turning Point Baptist Church, 5140 Bailey Road, Mulberry, FL 33860. Food and fellowship will be immediately after at Mike's house at 8015 U.S. Hwy. 98 N., Lakeland.
