Mary  Elliott


Mary A. (Cheek) Elliott, 91, of Washington, passed away at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday at Hillside Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Lawrence County, to Matthew and Birdie (Smith) Cheek. She graduated from Bedford High School, married Sherrill Elliott on Sept. 19, 1947, and lived in Bedford before moving to Washington in 1959.
She was a teacher's aide at the West End School from 1968 to 1969 school year. For many years of her life she was a cashier at various grocery stores. When anyone needed a babysitter, Mary was frequently called upon. Over the years she took care of over 50 children, many who dropped by to see her in her home, where she lived for 46 years. Mary was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she attended until she was no longer able.
She is survived by three sons, Brent (Carol) Elliott of Washington, Dr. Jay (Terri) Elliott of Arnold, Missouri, and Matt (Heather) Elliott of Washington; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; and two brothers, Raymond and Orville Cheek.
Funeral services will be Saturday at noon at Ed Lee Mortuary North Chapel, 620 E. Viola Ave., Washington, Indiana, with Pastor Louis Showers officiating. Entombment will follow in Sugarland Memory Gardens mausoleum. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Ed Lee Mortuary North Chapel.

It is so good to hear from you Pat! I think about fun days with Tim and Kelly and you and Don and your daughter ( sorry I have forgotten her name ) every now and then. I am doing fine living in St. Louis Missouri married and teaching at Logan University. I hope you all are doing well also.

Mary and we’re married to Elliott brothers, Sherrill and Don. We went to high school together and were very close friends, and I will sadly miss her. She was a sweetheart and caring to everyone. Love, Gloria Elliott
