Joseph W. Skomp, 74, of Lyons, passed away Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, at his home.
He was born Oct. 27, 1943, to Faye (Magner) and Joseph B. Skomp.
Joe was a graduate of the 1961 class of Central High School in Switz City. He was employed at NWSC Crane for 38 years and 10 years at SAIC. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. Joe was a member of the Linton Elks, Knights of Columbus, Saint Peter Catholic Church in Linton, and Lyons American Legion. He enjoyed attending the veteran's coffee group, coaching cross country, youth basketball, being outdoors, mowing and gardening.
Surviving relatives include his wife Irene (Strange) Skomp, whom he married Aug. 19, 1967; two sons, Jerry D. Skomp (Deborah) of Noblesville, Jason B. Skomp (Amber) of Lyons; his grandchildren, Jack and Anna Skomp, Hank and Miles Skomp and Lyric Shaw; two sisters, Ruth Skomp of Portland, Oregon, Janet Nybakke (John) of Astoria, Oregon; sister-in-law Ann Skomp of Crawfordsville; and aunt, Carolyn Burgess (Bob) of Michigan.
Joe is preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey W. Skomp; two brothers, Jim and John Skomp; and his parents.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, and Monday 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Jenkins Funeral Home in Lyons.
A Burial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Saint Peter Catholic Church in Linton, with Rev. Beju Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Chapel Cemetery in Lyons.
