Helen "Catherine"'s Story
Helen "Catherine" Yates, 94, of Bloomington, passed away Friday at her home in Bloomington, with her family by her side. She was born March 8, 1923, in Bloomington, to George Edwin and Mildred A. (Halstead) Bennett. Catherine was a 1941 graduate of Bloomington High School. She married Robert Merle Yates on July 4, 1942 in Bloomington. She worked at Indiana University for 20 years in the bursar's office before retiring in 1986, after retiring she worked at the Ed Bennett Stone Company as vice president in the family business. Catherine was a member of the Southern Hill Church of Christ.
She loved the water, boating, gardening, shopping, traveling. She was a mother first and lived for her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Darlena Kay (Clifford) Smith; son Robert S. (Martha) Yates; three grandchildren, James Edward (Lora Payne) Wolven, Kerri Lynn (Andrew) Rozzi, Jennifer (Billie) Parton; five stepgrandchildren, Daniel Smith, Lorie (Doug) Young, Julie (Josh Hinson) Sparks, Jamie (Mike) Shipley, Jennifer (John) Byrd; great-grandchildren Katie Wolven, Xalden Wolven, Caleb Rozzi, Gavin Parton, Alexis Parton, Sidney Parton, Lexie Parton; several great-great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Middy (Pat) Kelly.
Catherine is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; several cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Allen Funeral Home & Crematory, 4155 S. Old SR 37, with Rev. Pat Arthur officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Visitation was Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Hill Church of Christ or the Alzheimer's Association
