Donald K. Colbert

July 16, 1933 - October 26, 2018

Donald K. Colbert Donald K. Colbert, 85, Greenfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. He was born in Daviess County on July 16, 1933, to George and Irene (Mosby) Colbert and was the youngest of three children.
He spent most of his youth in Washington, Indiana, and enjoyed his time on the football field, basketball court and track at Washington High School and remained a Hatchets fan his entire life. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S Navy and was stationed in the Philippines during the Korean War. He was eventually stationed in Bethesda, Maryland, as a dental technician. It was there that he met Druella Harris of Knoxville, Tennessee. They were married in Knoxville in 1956 and had four children while living in Washington, Terre Haute, and Chicago. She survives him and lives in Fishers, Indiana. In 1983, Don married Joyce Zartman who also had four children. Don and Joyce eventually moved to Greenfield and shared their home together with family and friends for over 25 years.
In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but eventually he grew to enjoy walking and sitting outdoors and observing the complexities of Mother Nature. He was an avid reader of mostly non-fiction and read several books a week. He also embraced technology and Googled his interests and questions daily while watching nature shows, current events and Butler basketball on television. He especially enjoyed meals and time with family discussing both international and domestic affairs, sports and keeping up with the interests of his children and grandchildren.
Don earned both bachelor's and graduate degrees from Indiana State University, but considered himself a student of life. He enjoyed talking with and learning from most everyone he met. It was difficult to find anything that didn't interest him at some level. He continued to work for McDaniel Controls and traveled several states up until his passing. He considered his customers among his friends.
Survivors include his children: son, Brad Colbert of Indianapolis; son, Chris (Melissa) Colbert of Terre Haute; daughter, Gretchen (Joe) Brooks of Fishers; and daughter, Allison (Jeff Eichelberger) Colbert of Indianapolis. Also, daughter, Jackie (Rick) Carlile of Kokomo; son, Rick (Kathy) Bennett of Kokomo; son, David (Yvonne) Zartman of Cass City, Michigan; 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several great-nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sister, Dixie Settle of Jasper; nephews, David Schwartz and Kent Settle; niece, Susan Sterner; brothers-in-law, Kelson (Sally) McDaniel and Bob McDaniel; and sister-in-law, Nelwyn Lorio.
Don is preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Joyce; and his beloved sister, Jean Schwartz.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the Hancock County EMTs, the Hancock County Hospital Emergency Room staff and Hancock County Hospital Hospice for the professional and genuine care they provided during the last day of Don's life on earth.
A private burial service will be held on Nov. 8, 2018. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in his name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or a book/reading program of choice. Online condolences may be left at www.stoutandson.com. Stout and Son Funeral Home is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.
