Cynthia Marie Fitzpatrick Beck passed away Dec. 19, 2017, following a brief illness. She was born in 1946 in Washington to J. Lloyd and Mary E. (Kanakis) Fitzpatrick, who preceded her in death. In 1967, she married Dr. James P. Beck, who is also deceased.
Cynthia graduated from Washington High School and from Indiana University. At age 40, she began her work in accounting with the Army and the Department of Defense at Crane. Her career continued with assignments in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, Washington, D.C., and a three-year post with S.H.A.P.E. in Mons, Belgium. When she retired, she moved to Clearwater Beach, Florida. This fall she decided to relocate to Iowa City, Iowa, to be closer to her daughter.
Cynthia is survived by sisters Pamela (James) Scheid of Washington and Janet Smiley of Oakland, California. She is also survived by her children Margaret (Matthew) Beck Hill, Iowa City, Patrick (Lana) of Indianapolis, and Kathryn (Jeffery) Maynard of Columbus, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, Oscar and Georgia Hill, Madeline, Eli and Olivia Beck, and Veronica and Eve Maynard.
A graveside service and a celebration of her life is planned for this spring in Washington. The family has requested that remembrances of Cynthia may be made through donations to the Bird House Hospice Center, P.O. Box 3338, Iowa City, IA 52244.
